San Francisco-based guitarist and producer Richard
Michos has performed locally and internationally for many years.
He holds music composition and technology degrees from UC San Diego and the
Berklee College of Music in Boston. He is an established guitar instructor in
the SF Bay Area currently holding the head teaching duties at the music store
in the west portal area. He is producing and remixing several ongoing projects
and is the driving force behind the world music group Shabaz, who are signed
with Miles Copeland’s ARK 21 label. Recently Shabaz has recorded with
Narada Michael Walden and performed at the Montreal Jazz Festival. Michos has
written tracks for the Egyptian star Hakim, for Indian vocalist Najma. He will
be touring Spain and Italy this spring with his wife, vocalist Riffat Sultana.
Michos has produced albums for
the labels Ark 21, Hearts of Space, City of Tribes, and X Dot 25. His most recent

His group’s first two album releases with the Ali Khan band, Taswir and
Zindagi, earned Bammie nominations, while his 2002 disc, Shabaz, has been reviewed
in Billboard and was highly rated on the CMJ radio chart. Shabaz has been interviewed
for feature articles in both Rhythm magazine and Folk Roots. In addition to
this activity, Michos is also
product development specialist for Sonic Foundry, Inc., a leading manufacturer
of computer audio software. A review of his Loops for Acid CD appears in the
November, 2003
issue of Electronic Musician.
Michos is proficient at both
electric and acoustic guitar, as well as sampling, double string styles, and
guitar synthesis. A serious student of world music, he is married to the daughter
of Pakistan’s most famous North Indian classical vocalist, Ustad Salamat
Ali Khan. Michos has recorded
with world- renowned Indian musicians Shafqat Ali Khan, Ustad Sultan Khan, Pandit
Ramesh Mishra, and modern DJ remixer DJ Chebb I Sabah, as well as touring
the US and Europe with his wife and acoustic ensemble. Michos specializes in
fusing ancient melodies (ragas and macombs) in with modern grooves and instrumentation.
In his latest venture he explores quarter tones on the guitar with master Lebanese
violinist Georgess Lammam.
