Rosie O'Donnell grew up wanting to be Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Carol Burnett and Lucille Ball her ideals of the allaround performer. A versatile actress, musical performer and comedienne, O'Donnell is about to add another another dimension to her considerable talents as she takes on the assignment of host and executive producer of the nationally syndicated talk/variety series The Rosie O'Donnell Show.
Regarded as one of Hollywood's top comedic actresses, O'Donnell made her motion picture debut just four years ago in Penny Marshall's smash comedy film A League of Their Own starring opposite Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna. O'Donnell recalls that she got the role because she was the only actress in Hollywood who could throw a baseball from third to first base.
She has gone on to star on the big screen in Now and Then with Demi Moore, Melanie Griffith and Rita Wilson; Nora Ephron's Sleepless in Seattle with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks (reuniting her with Hanks and resulting in garnering an American Comedy Award nomination); The Flintstones with John Goodman, Rick Moranis and Elizabeth Perkins (O'Donnell's Betty Rubble won her Nickelodeon's 'Kid's Choice Award' for Favorite Movie Actress); Carry Marshall's Exit to Eden opposite Dan Aykroyd and Dana Delaney, and Another Stakeout with Richard Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez (for which she received American Comedy Award nomination). Most recently, she starred in Beautiful Girls with Uma Thurman, Timothy Hutton and Mira Sorvino.
Last summer, she starred in Harriet the Spy, the 11 year old girl (played by Michele Trachtenberg) who spies on her parents, neighbors and friends, candidly scribbling every detail of their comings and goings in her secret spy notebook. O'Donnell starred as Golly, Harriet's beloved companion and mentor.
An extraordinarily successful standup favorite who has crisscrossed the country innumerable times playing cubs, concerts and major showrooms, O'Donnell the recontuer received an Emmy nomination for her HBO Comedy Hour special this past year.
Ever increasing her accomplishments, the multitalented O'Donnell added Broadway to her repertoire in 1995, when she made her Broadway debut starring as Rizzo in Tommy Tune's revival of Grease. O'Donnell hosted the toprated cable show Stand Up Spotlight on VH1 and served as the series' executive producer. And, adding yet another creative feat to her achievements, she has agreed to write a book for Warner Books that chronicles her life from childhood to today.
