The Goo Goo Dolls originated in Buffalo, NY in 1985. Guitarist/vocalist Johnny Rzeznik, bassist Robby Takac, and drummer George Tutuska joined forces under the name the Sex Maggots. They were originally a cover band that performed power pop and classic rock & roll. They then began writing original songs. Their early sound recalled the Replacements'. Their sound was what attracted the interest of the heavy metal label Metal Blade, which put out their debut album in 1987 when they changed their name to the Goo Goo Dolls. The song “Name” from the 1995's A Boy Named Goo was released as a single and climbed the Top Five later that year and platinum sales followed close behind. In 1998, the song “Iris” became a monster hit that spent nearly an entire year on Billboard’s airplay charts, which included 18 weeks at the number one spot, and was also nominated for three Grammy Awards. The Goo Goo Dolls next album, Dizzy Up the Girl, was released during the time of "Iris" marathon run and sold well over three million copies. Even more hits from the album followed over the course of the next year, including "Slide," "Dizzy," "Broadway," and the Grammy-nominated "Black Balloon." Check out our other Rock Stars
