Lions first appeared in China during the Tang dynasty (A.D. 617-906), when jugglers & animal trainers from India first brought them into China. As Lions are not native to China, cloth and other fabric such as silk were used to make the costumes, complete with head and tail. Using two persons manipulating the head and tail, Chinese Lion Dancers simulate the lions gyrations to the accompaniment of drum and cymbal & firecrackers!
